What are specialty lenses?

Specialty lenses are contacts that treat certain eye conditions and refractive errors, including:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia)
  • Far-sightedness (hyperopia)
  • Age-related vision changes (presbyopia)
  • Distorted vision (astigmatism)
  • Keratoconus (corneal thinning and bulging)

Edwin Y. Endo, OD & Associates offers a range of specialty lenses to meet your needs. They perform comprehensive eye exams to determine which specialty lenses are right for you to clear your vision and treat underlying eye conditions.

Why would I need specialty lenses?

You may benefit from the specialty lenses available at the office of Edwin Y. Endo, OD & Associates if you’re not interested in wearing eyeglasses but need to improve your vision.

The team may recommend specialty lenses if your vision isn’t clear, if you need multifocal lenses, or if you have eye conditions like:

  • Dry eyes
  • Keratoconus
  • Corneal scarring
  • Congenital corneal conditions

Specialty lenses are also available for those who continue to have poor vision or other issues after Lasik or other types of refractive surgery.

How do specialty lenses work?

Specialty lenses work in different ways to give you clearer vision. The office of Edwin Y. Endo, OD & Associates offer specialty lenses from SynergEyes®, including:

Soft lenses

Soft lenses are made of soft, flexible plastic that fits the shape of your eye. They provide stable, clear vision and are a comfortable option for many people who need prescription lenses.

There are also soft lenses available to treat eye diseases like dry eyes.

Gas permeable (GP) lenses

Gas permeable lenses are made with more rigid but breathable materials to provide sharper, clearer vision for those with astigmatism. These lenses are more durable than soft lenses and cover only about 80% of your cornea.

Duette® lenses

Duette contact lenses provide clearer, sharper vision than traditional soft or gas permeable contacts. Duette lenses work well for those with astigmatism who find GP lenses uncomfortable.

Scleral lenses

Scleral lenses are larger in size than GP lenses but are made of the same material. This type of specialty lens gradually changes the shape of an irregular cornea to improve and preserve good vision.
