New Year, New You: 3 Resolutions for Healthier Eyes
As we look ahead to 2026, it's important to take care of the eyes that let you see the world. Here are three resolutions to support your ocular health.

With the new year underway, you might be feeling refreshed and energized to work toward the goals you set.  If you’re like most Americans, some of those New Year’s resolutions focus on your physical wellness. Health-related goals like eating better and exercising more are particularly common

While resolutions that focus on your overall wellness make a difference, you should also zoom in on specific areas of your body that play a significant role in your experience. Take your eyes, for example.

By making a few decisions to support your ocular health, you lower your risk of issues that could impair your vision. Here at Edwin Y. Endo, OD & Associates, we want to help you do exactly that. Dr. Endo tapped his expertise in eye health to come up with a few suggestions. Pair these three resolutions with a visit to our office in Aiea, Hawaii, to get the care your eyes need in 2026.

#1: Eat a nutritious diet

What you eat directly affects your eye health. Your diet can provide your eyes with the nutrients they need, such as zinc, vitamin C, and lutein.

These nutrients lower your risk of eye damage and chronic eye diseases.

The overarching guidance is to eat a variety of whole foods, especially colorful fruits and vegetables. They contain many of the key nutrients for ocular health.

If you want more specific recommendations to support your eyes and overall health, come see us. Dr. Endo offers nutritional counseling.

#2: Use the 20-20-20 rule

In 2026, most of us are living in ways that put us at risk of digital eye strain. Fortunately, applying a simple, free rule can help. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something that’s 20 feet away.

This 20-20-20 rule helps you avoid dry eyes, headaches, and other issues that come from looking at screens for too long.

#3: Get a dilated eye exam

Some of the most common eye conditions don’t present symptoms early. That’s an issue because the same diseases are often progressive, meaning they get worse over time if you don’t intervene. That’s true for both macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Fortunately, Dr. Endo can use a dilated eye exam to check for these conditions and others, including diabetic retinopathy. This means applying eye drops to dilate your pupils, then using equipment to evaluate the nerves and tissues in your eye. It’s a simple, noninvasive way to get a clearer picture of your eye health. This way, you can intervene if your eyes need added care.

With these three resolutions, you take proactive measures to support your eye health in 2026 and beyond. To schedule nutritional counseling or a dilated eye exam, call our office at 808-774-3838today.
